April 28, 2008

It's been a week now, and it's great to be home again!  To sleep in my own bed, to see my family each morning...eating a hot breakfast in the morning.  All the simple things you take for granted when you are out on tour.

And what a tour it was.  I am still recovering from the incredible highs and lows and find I still wake up at 4 AM each day, unable to get back to sleep!  I intended to post some pictures and updates from each country, but my laptop died my first day in Berlin!  But I do have a good selection of pictures and anecdotes that I'd like to add in the coming weeks.  For now I am just getting used to being back home again.

It was an incredible honor to share a stage with Graham Bonnet, and to play those classic songs (as well as some killer new material) before crowds that were hungry to hear the man who has fronted Rainbow, Alcatrazz, the Michael Schenker Group and many more!  The Taz Taylor band were a good bunch of solid players, and I was thrilled to be playing with all of them each night.  The tour gave me a better global perspective on rock music, and America's standing in the European landscape.  Yeah, they're not too thrilled with our politics right now...

But most importantly, I made some new friends.  Martin Motnik from our German support band The Roxx who became a brother to me on this tour.  And the fans who sent me numerous photos from the shows, and would occasionally show up with  with Ted Poley or Takara CD's (with Jeff Scott Soto's signature already on them - awesome!) for me to sign.  That was very touching, and you all hold a special place in my heart.

When we arrived in Bochum, news arrived that Melodic Rock.com named me Keyboard Player of the Year!  This was a big honor for me, and I made a special thank-you video with Graham & Taz.  (If you watch closely you can see me clock Graham in the head!)  So thanks to Andrew McNiece, and all the MR.com regulars who not only speak highly of me but also faithfully buy my CD's.  I've got a lot of new stuff coming this summer and I think you will enjoy it!

I made plans to hook up with some good friends that I have recorded with but never actually met...guys like David Readman and Michael Bormann.  While both were unable to make it, I did get a surprise from Germany guitar hero Axel Rudi Pell.  Although we have both worked with Jeff Scott Soto, Axel & I never actually met.  He came up to me after the show and said "so, I hear you are the keyboard player of the year..."  That was a nice shot in the arm.  : )

On a different note, the Russian dates for this tour have now been scrapped.  There were a lot of factors to this decision, which is ultimately for the best.  I had some memorable times with these guys, and wish them well in whatever comes next!

Looking back, I initially got the call for this tour while wrapping up the China Blue recording with Josh Ramos here over the holidays.  So it was fitting that the final mixes were wrapped up during the first days of the tour!  Without internet access, I found myself racking up $800 in data charges on my cell phone!  But the final package looks and sounds amazing - I mean just the way I envisioned it - and has been submitted to the label.  My deepest thanks to JK, Ron Vining and everyone involved for helping me see this dream through to fruition.

Speaking of China Blue, you can order autographed copies of Tony Mills (TNT) new CD A Vital Design, as well as new t-shirts from the tour as shown at right.  Tony allowed me to really stretch out musically on this one.   The proceeds go the Foundation for Autistic Children in Norway.  More info on Tony's My Space page.

I also received some new masters for the planned re-release of the Vox Tempus album.  We originally released this in 2004 on a shoestring budget and zero promotion.  Over the years it's become a cult favorite, and I'm excited that Angelmilk Records is working actively on releasing this in Europe and Japan.  Thanks Andy Bramhall and to A&R Directory Andrew McNiece!

I guess that wraps up the first quarter of 2008!  What will the next quarter bring?  I can't wait to find out!  In the meantime, I have finally updated my Video page to feature some of the great videos that you all have been posting in places like You Tube and My Space!   If you think I'm missing something let me know!  For now you can check them out here!

saying goodbye

April 1, 2008

Well...not a lot to say here.  It was a sad morning as I made breakfast for my kids & took them to school for the last time this month.  They are so amazing & I already miss them so much!  Kieran said "Daddy, why don't you just tell the band that you're sick..."  It broke my heart.

We had our final rehearsal with Graham this afternoon, and it was a real blast!  The man has boundless energy and a great sense of humor!  We leave for Berlin tomorrow so I'm up late packing tonight, tired but full of adrenaline!  It's gonna be a wild ride.  Be sure to check out my Shows page for all the latest.

I spent the rest of the week overseeing the final stages of the China Blue album.  God bless JK Northrup man, he is cranking out these mixes so I won't have to review them all from the tour bus.  And Ron Vining has been working all night long on the booklet!  We've got a great team in place and everyone is feeling very confident.

With that, I'm off.  Thanks to everyone who sent their well wishes.  To my friends in Europe, I look forward to seeing you very soon.

March 23, 2008

First, let me go on record here that I started this latest update a month ago.  This past year has been a even bigger roller coaster than the last one, and it's all that I can do just to keep up with it!  It's an amazing time, but it's also pretty exhausting.  We're already 1/4 the way through 2008, and in two weeks I will be in Berlin.  Crazy huh?

There is so much to do. I’m splitting my time between practicing for the tour, tying up loose ends and making sure my family has everything they will need while I am away. I don’t like to let anyone down, so I spend a lot of time jotting down things that need to be done in the coming weeks. Like paying the gas bill. Or fixing our home arcade system.  Or knocking out some quick tracks on the side for some undisclosed releases...

...or writing these blogs.

my kids demonstrate Roland's motion-sensitive D-Beam

As for the tour, rehearsals have been going amazing well.  But it's a three hour drive each way to San Diego, so it's been time consuming.  But it gives me a chance to visit  with my god daughter Brittany. : )

In the midst of this I received news that Margaret Flanagan passed away at age 73.  My closest friends and diehard fans remember my longtime ties to this family, especially her grandson Billy.  I jumped on a plane hours after hearing the news, and stopped the clock on everything to spend a few days with the family during this difficult time.  It gave me some perspective.  Please keep them in your prayers.

As the action resumes, I've been updating my tour dates page to reflect the first in a series of Russian dates.  Yep, our Russian work visas came in this week so it's official.  We get a ten day break after returning from Europe, and then it's on to Moscow.  More dates to follow.

The next thing on my plate is the mixing and submission of the China Blue album, Twilight of Destiny.  We had some unfortunate speed bumps in the mixing of this record (no kidding!) but it is now being mixed by the very capable JK Northrup.  JK has been a friend since the beginning of last year, when we worked on both Ted Poley's Smile album and the debut from Solna.  He works fast and knows exactly what we're shooting for.  In the four days since we've officially signed him on to mix/master this release, he's already finished five mixes with  no guidance or rough mixes as a guide.  The man knows his stuff and I'm looking forward to doing a lot more with him in the future.  Meanwhile our manager Ron Vining has done a kick-ass redesign of the China Blue page - check it out!  He has also written a nice piece on me in his artist spotlight, which you can read on his company's webpage.

Speaking of Ted Poley, congratulations to him, me & JK (and Vic Rivera & everyone else involved) for hitting the top spot for the AOR Underground Album of the Year with Ted's Smile record!  Their explanation?  "Because it's the AOR feelgood moment of the year, that's why."  Yeah I know!  I still can't stop playing it myself!

Look for me joining Ted at an acoustic concert-in-the-park on June 29th.  Some of my friends over at The Annex will be coming a great distance to see this show (it's shaping into a lot of folks) and they put together some cool flyers, including the one shown here.  I am extremely flattered - thanks guys!

Frontiers Records has started revealing more about the upcoming From the Inside release, due this summer..  I'm really proud of this one, and I'm excited that they are using one of the songs I wrote (Light Years) as the single, and another (Visions) as the title track.  (Check out a quick clip of Light Years here.)  The album features Tyketto singer Danny Vaughn and was mixed by Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Pretty Maids, TNT) in Denmark .  The sing is featured on the ROCK THE BONES Vol. 6 sampler, out now.  Look for the full album this summer.

DSC02122.JPG (70091 bytes)

Michael Bormann is putting the finishing touches on his next solo release, Capture the Moment.  I appear on three songs this time out, including the single Glory & Pain, a duet Michael performs with  Edenbridge singer Sabine Edelsbacher.  Mike is an easy fellow to work with and the songs rock!  The release is schedule for May 23 through RMB/AOR Heaven.

Tony Mills new album isn't due until next month, but the first review has already popped on on Rock EyezCheck out their stunning review here.  I have not heard the full album yet, but the Rock Eyez guys recognized my playing in the ballad Sunniva, and contacted me about it.  I play on eight of the thirteen tracks, which rock from top to bottom.

Tony did send me a scan of the album insert, which I've posted here.  (If you can't find me, look fro the only bald guy on the album.  ; )  On March 24 Tony will be on internet radio for a 2 hour session listening through some of his favorite music and tracks that he has been involved in over the years, as well as tracks from the new album and talk of his upcoming solo tour.

You can listen to the interview here from 1900 -2100 (GMT).

Speaking of Rock Eyez, they also posted an in-depth review of the show I played in January with American Angel, along with Joe Lynn Turner & Hostel Inc.  They were very kind to me in this review, which you can read here.  Also check out Burningmetal.net, who posted a short review and photo essay from the show.

Congratulations to my friend Jack Frost (Seven Witches) for joining forces with Joey Belladonna (ex-Anthrax) for his upcoming tour.  Joey says of this unholiest of unions, "I am happy to have Jack in the family and to have someone of his caliber on board. He is a great guitarist/musician and it is an honor to play with him. I cannot wait to hit the road and play for all the fans."   Jack adds, "It is a great honor to be playing with Joey and such great musicians who have the same work ethic as me. I could not be happier to be a part of this band.  After bouncing around from gig to gig, it is great to finally find a home. I cannot wait to get out on the road and perform and hit the studio to write and record with these guys."

Belladonna is gearing up for their worldwide Never Look Back tour, going on the road April 1. The 7 week multi-city engagement will take them across the US and Canada, then sending them to Mexico, South America, Europe and Australia by year's end. In their downtime from touring, Belladonna will be hard at work on a new album due some time this fall.

Finally...congratulations to my friends in Talon, who signed to Kivel Records this month.  The band is currently writing material for the next album, which they will start recording this spring at the Recovery Room Studios. My friend (and the band's drummer) John Parker said, "We are very excited about the next chapter in our career as a band and are looking forward to working with Kivel Records. The new material is something we are exited about, as it will bring us to a fresh and new level as a band. When it's done, I can promise that this album will kick your teeth in. We can't wait to unleash the new songs on a live crowd, which will be sooner then you think.....!"  Look for a early summer release.  And look for me joining the band at Firefest this year in Nottingham.

To be honest, I don't know when I'm going to get to write another update to this site.  There is a lot of work ahead, and I can only imagine the kind of stories I will have a month from now.  I look forward to seeing many of you on tour.  Until then...rock on!

Man…it’s been nearly a month since my last update.  I’ve been trying hard to keep the news cycle current, but there is so much going on in such a short span of time it’s become nearly impossible.  I've been making a real effort to slow things down - right now it's all about the upcoming tour.  But let's try to catch you up with the latest…

newport_lounge.jpg (46736 bytes)

This week is always a special one for us, as we celebrated both Valentine’s Day and my third anniversary with Kim.  While the rest of you are freezing your asses off, she surprised me with a cottage on the beach at Newport Dunes.  She joked that this would be the best gift I’d ever gotten – and it was.  I really needed a break from it all (the internet, the cell phone, the pending albums and admittedly, a night without the kids).  The kids came down the following day for an additional night.  It was really special and I will never forget it.

newport_lake.jpg (57869 bytes)

When we came home we went right to the Staples Center for courtside seats to the Harlem Globetrotters game.  I loved them when I was a kid and now my kids are hooked on them.  We sat across from Jason Lee.  Also at the game was Jim Belushi, Sugar Ray Leonard  & Vanna White.  It was a nice cap to an awesome weekend that nobody wanted to end.

But I’m back and the pressure is on now.  I’ve submitted all of my outstanding work and have dedicated February to my family, and the prep work for this tour.  I’ve been trying hard to not to take business calls during dinner and stuff like that, and I’ve handed off all of my My Space pages to a very capable moderator who has done wonders so far.  Check out the revamped page here

newport_nite.jpg (26352 bytes)

Our cottage at nite...wish I was still there!

As the month rolls on I’ve been getting all kinds of great offers for work during the month of April – but I will be in Europe all month!  One of the more interesting ones was a call I got from the producers at VH1 to audition for their remake of the classic game show Name That Tune.  I was intrigued by the idea, but sure enough the show tapes in April.  Nuts.

Kieran reaches out for high-fives

Regrettably the March dates for the Taz Taylor tour with Graham Bonnett have been scrubbed.  This was unfortunate, but the April dates are still on and may even be extended.  (I received my flight info this morning - killer!)  This change of schedule allowed me some additional time to catch up on my work and spend some quality time with the kids.  I’ve been spending alternate weekends in San Diego to rehearse with Taz & the guys and I'm getting really pumped about the tour!  They’ve posted info about me on the website, which you can read here.  With any luck I will be on the tour poster soon too.  : )

Vic Rivera contacted me about doing some touch-up work on my track for the upcoming Poley/Rivera record.  I recorded the final parts over the phone while Vic listened and offered feedback.  He had the final track 20 minutes later, and sent me a final mix an hour after that.  Gotta love technology!  Vic has been burning the midnight oil with this one and what I’ve heard so far really sounds amazing.  I've posted the cover art here.

I also received cover art for the upcoming Tony Mills album, Vital Designs, where I play on eight tracks.  I wanted to do the entire record but our schedules ran into each other at the end.  This album is radical and TNT fans will eat it up!  Tony contacted me about going on tour with him in Scandinavia in April, but I am already committed to be out with Taz & Graham.  I’m bummed as that would really would have been fun!

In other news, I received the final mixes last week of the From the Inside disc (featuring Danny Vaughn) and I'm really proud of what we accomplished on this record.  I wrote several songs on this disc, including first single (Light Years) and the title track (Visions).  Frontiers Records has featured us on their latest Rock the Bones compilation, along with Dokken, Asia, White Lion, Jimi Jamison (Survivor) and Steve Lukather (Toto).   (Check out more details about the compilation disc here.)

My final piece of news is about the Ramos/Hugo album.  Hugo flew to Los Angeles last week and worked with Fabrizio Grossi to finish the vocals for the new album.  I've been listening to the rough mixes almost every day now and I am truly blown away.  I am so proud of this album and the performances that everyone brought to the table.  I can see already that this one is going to create a lot of buzz and debate!  And I'm seriously looking forward to it.  I wrapped up an acoustic remix for one of the ballads yesterday, which is the final piece of the puzzle.  Now it's off for mixing.  Wow...

DSC02080.JPG (78374 bytes)

with Hugo in the U.K.

If you're catching a theme here, I'm wrapping up a lot of things to focus on this killer tour.  And to spend time with my family.  It's been a busy year, most especially for these three records (Ramos/Hugo, From the Inside and China Blue) which I put so many hours and a lot of blood into.  And they are all finally reaching the finish line so Frontiers Records can package them for release.  These three are so closely linked together, it's like an Eric trilogy for me.  I can't wait for the world to hear them.

all that really matters

January 30, 2008

Hey!  I just got off the plane from a very LONG night in New Jersey!  Last night was an incredible triple bill featuring Hostel Inc. (with Ray West of Spread Eagle), Joe Lynn Turner and American Angel.  The event generated considerable press and was hosted by WDHA, who invited Joe to the station for a special on-air interview earlier in the week.  This gig was a unique homecoming show to celebrate the release of JLT's new album, Second Hand Life.  It was also a hometown show for the other acts as well, so it was no surprise that the venue quickly sold out!  I tried to bring in friends who were ready to buy tickets, but many were turned away.  But inside it was wall-to-wall rockers!

DSC02670.JPG (129547 bytes)

Karl Cochran, Joe Lynn Turner, me & Ted Poley

A lot of people flew in from different parts of the U.S. to witness this show - and I was one of them.  It was a great chance to play with my friends in American Angel, who I hadn't seen since our record release party here last September.  I had to arrive at the venue early, so I got to watch Joe Lynn Turner & his band run through their sound check.  I hadn't seen JLT since his awesome performance at the MR Fest in South Bend last year, and it was great to see him in action again.  Joe's band for this show was a veritable who's-who of the east coast scene - Karl Cochran-guitar (Ace Frehley and Eric Singer of KISS), Carmine Giglio-keyboards (Blackmore's Night; Trans Siberian Orchestra), Mike Sorrentino-drums (Ritchie Blackmore, "Movin' Out" on Broadway) and Paul DiLeo (Billy Joel, Lauryn Hill, Nena)-bass.  Everyone was in great spirits and very accommodating to make the complex stage plots work.  I posted some quick video of the band running through some classic Rainbow hits.  Check out one of these clips to the right or check out the entire video/picture page.

Joe Lynn Turner sound check - I Surrender

Earlier in the week I received a call from Vic Rivera, who was also coming to the show and asked if I could lay some down keyboards for a song from the upcoming Poley/Rivera album this week.  My schedule was tight but I had a few extra hours at the club, so Vic brought down his mobile unit and we recorded the track in the backstage area!  It's a beautiful song that finds Ted Poley singing at his best!  My thanks to Andrew McNiece for first pairing me up with Vic at the MR fest.  We make a good team and are sure to work together again soon.  Vic & I made a special video greeting for your readers which you can check out to the right.

Greetings from Vic Rivera & I, and an update about the new Poley/Rivera disc

Vic also brought along his Crunch/Adriangale band mate Eddie Campbell, and Ted Poley himself soon followed.  We toasted our work together on Ted’s Smile CD, which debuted on Japan' import chart at #4!  Jack Frost also joined us - Jack & I had a great time playing at NAMM together last weekend and the new Seven Witches album is intense!

But on with the show!  The first act to go on was Hostel Inc., featuring Ray West of Spread Eagle on vocals.  The band was very tight, and ran through a serious barrage of new songs as well as Spread Eagle classics like Switchblade Serenade.  Awesome.  I got to speak with Ray backstage, who was feeling mellow and genuinely thrilled by the packed hometown audience.

Next up was Joe Lynn Turner - and he didn't disappoint!  The band was phenomenal and ran through all the Rainbow classics, as well as Joe's solo material and some great tracks off of the new record.  They hit the stage at a high energy level and never let up!  The band closed with a double-encore of Deep Purple classics - Burn and Highway Star!  The crowd, as you can imagine, went wild.

Joe & the band conducted a meet & greet session shortly after as American Angel took the stage.  AA ran through a series of live favorites, new songs, and MTV classics like How Can I Miss You and After the Laughter, which had the crowd on their feet and singing along from the first beat.  The band had it's own celebration, having spent two weeks at the top of Billboard's Heatseeker chart - and it was also singer Rocco Fury's birthday!  It was an incredible night, and I ran into a lot of people from the MR message boards - many whom I'd never met in person, some who had been to South Bend (I spotted a guy in the crowded men's room with a Melodicrock.com t-shirt- now there's a conversation starter!), and of course a lot of new friends!  My thanks to everyone who made this night special.  A special thanks to the guys at RockEyez.com, who sent me a good amount of pictures, and will be posting their review of the show this week.  For now you can go here to see photos and video from this amazing night.

January 17, 2008

A whole new year, and a new look!  It’s 2008 and there is so much ground to cover!  Where to begin...

The holidays were great, as always! I had a lot of fun with the family, and I got some awesome gifts! I’ve had some dental problems…I’ve had some mental problems…lmao…but right now everyone is relatively healthy and for that I am grateful.

I had some great dinners around town with friends, and randomly bumped into people like Jordis Unga (Rock Star Supernova) on one day & Jessica Simpson the next - both spending time with their own loved ones.  It was a nice, relaxing holiday, and I really made an effort to focus more energy on my family.

But once Christmas Day was over, Kim & the kids flew to NJ to visit family back there.  I spent Christmas week recording Josh Ramos (The Storm, Hardline) as he finished his guitar parts for the upcoming China Blue album. Josh was amazing as always, as we enjoyed the spirit of the holidays while making some awesome music.

China Blue is gaining some real momentum now, and I owe a lot of this to Ron Vining & his management company.  He brought in a great engineer, Jack Marques, who also sings for the band Action.  The mixes have been inspiring and the labels have responded in kind.  More news to follow!

NAMM demos

NAMM begins

NAMM starts next weekend, and I've got a fairly light schedule this year.  Jack Frost & I will be playing some demos on Saturday afternoon but outside of some important meetings, it will be a great time to just hang out.  It's the first NAMM in awhile that neither of us are stuck on our feet for 7 hours straight giving demos.  I love it and I'm good at it, but I admit it's nice to have a break from working so much at the show and just enjoy it.

American Angel show this month in NJ

Once NAMM wraps I'll be packing for New Jersey to play a show with American Angel on the 26th.  Also on the bill is Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow, Deep Purple).   I haven't seen the guys in four months so I'm looking forward to getting back on stage with them.  (But can someone get Rocco to send me the damn setlist already?)

This is building up to be a big show.  Here is Joe's press release:

JOE LYNN TURNER CELEBRATES NEW ALBUM WITH RARE NORTHERN NJ CONCERT APPEARANCE:
(New York, NY) Former front man for (Ritchie Blackmore's) Rainbow and Deep Purple, Joe Lynn Turner ("JLT"), has lived most of his life in Northern New Jersey. He still makes him home there today but with his tireless participation in numerous and varied projects (i.e. Classic Rock Cares with Brian Johnson of AC/DC among others) and the incredible demand for his talents from audiences in Eastern Europe, Japan and other areas outside of the USA, it's rare that JLT will make an appearance onstage in his own "backyard."
Saturday, January 26, Joe Lynn Turner "comes home" to Dexters, 92 Route 23 North, Riverdale, NJ.
Doors Open: 7pm; JLT slated to hit the stage between 10:30pm-11pm Tickets: $10 (advance); $12 Day of Show.

Fans from all over the USA are traveling in for the Dexter's event from as far west as Arizona to the southern tip of Florida. As always, a local NJ-NYC area JLT show brings out many surprise VIP guests to the audience. Turner's band for this concert date includes: Karl Cochran-guitar (Ace Frehley and Eric Singer of KISS), Carmine Giglio-keyboards (Blackmores Night; Trans Siberian Orchestra), Mike Sorrentino-drums (Ritchie Blackmore, "Movin' Out" on Broadway) and Paul DiLeo (Billy Joel, Lauryn Hill, Nena)-bass. Other acts scheduled to perform: Hostel Inc (featuring Ray West of Spread Eagle on Lead Vocals) and American Angel.

...as I tie up loose ends...

Amidst all this I've been wrapping up some outside projects.  I am now six tracks into the new solo disc from Tony Mills (TNT), and completed two tracks for the upcoming Michael Bormann (ex-Jaded Heart) release.  I am working hard to finish these records before the end of this month, as there are more on the backburner for February.  And I have to wrap up the China Blue mixes, artwork, etc. before the next big road jaunt...

On tour with Taz Taylor & Graham Bonnet this Spring

We went to check out Graham Bonnet in Hollywood with the Taz Taylor band.  Taz is an awesome guitarist, and I was already a fan of Graham's work with Rainbow, Alcatrazz, Impelliterri, Blackthorne...the list goes on.  (Tom Gasbarro used to tell me that "everything sounds better with Graham Bonnet on it!")  I've gotten to know the band recently and I'm privileged to be filling in for their European tour, which kicks off in March at The Robin in Bilston, England.  More dates to follow shortly.

My last interview for 2007 was with Rock Eyez, a very cool site run by some great people who have been instrumental recently in helping me pull this China Blue album together.  The guys did their research on this interview!  There are a lot of questions going all the way back to the very beginning of my career, as well as questions about 2007 that make it a nice year-end recap.  Read my interview here.

The guys also followed up with an interview with China Blue bassist Doug Odell (Crunch, TNA).  Read Doug's interview here

Ted Poley CD charts in Japan / and more Burrn! pics

I got an exciting e-mail this week from Ted Poley (Danger Danger) that the album we did together debuted at #4 this week on the Japanese Import Charts!  This is a great record that I am especially proud of.  You can find the chart in this month's Burrn! magazine in Japan, which also includes a feature of the Firefest gig I did with Steve Grimmett, along with a pic of us.  or download the chart here.  After charting in Billboard last month with American Angel, I'm pretty stoked to be on top of the Japanese charts now too.  Congratulations Ted!

David Readman sees Japanese release

After a successful European run, the album I recorded with David Readman has now been re-released in Japan.  It includes a special bonus track I put together - a piano duet that of one of David's songs, Take These Tears.   I really enjoy doing these piano remixes and they seem to be increasingly popular with the Japanese market.

Of course there is more...there is ALWAYS more!  I'm anticipating another record for February, while I rehearse with Taz & the guys for this upcoming tour.  There is a lot of work to be done, and I am ready to do it!  So here's to a rocking 2008 filled with passion, energy & most of all, great music!
